T20, ODI and Test — how betting differs across the three formats

prometric T20 and ODI Cricket Format Comparison

Cricket betting covers three distinct formats — T20, ODI and Test — and each offers a different betting experience. T20 is the fastest and most action-packed — a match's outcome can shift within just 20 overs. Odds move on every ball, because a six or a wicket can change the entire momentum. BPL and IPL are the two T20 leagues that attract the most interest among cricket fans in Bangladesh.

ODI cricket offers more betting opportunities across a 50-over match, as the strategy runs deeper. Top batsman, opening partnership or runs in a specific over — these markets are especially popular in ODIs. ICC tournaments, the T20 World Cup and ODI matches in bilateral series attract the most attention.

Test cricket betting across a five-day match works quite differently. A draw is a valid result, so a three-way betting market applies. Innings results, runs per session and series winner bets are what make Test cricket distinctive.

Football and other sports: At prometric you can bet on football as well as cricket. The key difference is that cricket offers more over-by-over live bets, while football leans more heavily on goal-line and half-time markets.

7 popular cricket betting markets at prometric

A brief explanation and a simple example for each market are given below. Betting is for entertainment — this is not financial advice.

Match Winner

Picking which team will win the match is the simplest bet. In T20 and ODI you choose one of the two teams. Example: Team A vs Team B — you bet on Team B, and if Team B wins your bet is successful.

Toss Winner

You can bet on which team will win the toss before the match starts. The result is entirely random — it has no connection to form or quality of play. Example: Team A's odds to win the toss are 1.90 and Team B's are 1.90 — the two are usually very close.

Top Batsman

Which batsman will score the most runs in a particular innings — this is a slightly more strategic market. Example: choosing one of three batsmen from Team A who you think will score the most runs.

Total Runs Over/Under

Whether total runs in a match or an innings will go above (over) or stay below (under) a set number. Example: a line of 160 runs is set for a T20 innings — if you think the total will exceed it, you take "over".

Multi Bet (multiple selections)

You can bet on several matches at once and multiply the odds together. However, if any selection is wrong the entire bet loses. Example: bets on three matches at odds of 1.60, 1.80 and 1.90 — a ৳100 stake could return ৳547, but if even one is wrong the full ৳100 is lost.

Man of the Match

Picking who will be named the best player of the match before it is decided. This market typically offers higher odds because there are many candidates. Example: choosing one from five batsmen and three bowlers.

Handicap Betting

One team is given an artificial advantage or disadvantage to level the difference between the two sides. Example: a -15 run handicap on Team A means their bet wins only if they win by 16 or more runs.

Decimal, fractional and American — odds in three formats

The same price can be displayed in three different ways. The two examples below make it easy to understand.

Example 1 — the same odds in three formats

Format Value Explanation
Decimal 2.25 Total return of ৳2.25 for every ৳1 staked
Fractional 5/4 ৳5 profit for every ৳4 staked
American +125 ৳125 profit on a ৳100 bet
A ৳1,000 bet on Team A winning — if it wins, total return is ৳2,250 (৳1,250 profit plus ৳1,000 stake back); if it loses, ৳1,000 is gone.
Decimal Fractional American

Example 2 — favourite's odds

Format Value Explanation
Decimal 1.50 Total return of ৳1.50 for every ৳1 staked
Fractional 1/2 ৳1 profit for every ৳2 staked
American -200 ৳100 profit on a ৳200 bet (minus = favourite)
Team B is the favourite — a winning ৳1,000 bet returns a total of ৳1,500 (৳500 profit). In American format a minus sign means that team is the favourite.
Favourite Lower Profit Higher Certainty

"Team A" and "Team B" are used here — these are examples only and do not reflect any real match. Betting does not guarantee profit; it is entertainment.

Odds shift when a wicket falls — live in-play betting LIVE

prometric Live In-Play Cricket Betting Dashboard

Live betting is the most engaging side of cricket. During a match, odds keep changing every over, after big shots and after every wicket. When momentum shifts from one team to the other, the team that is behind sees its odds lengthen while the team in front sees its odds shorten.

Consider this example: if Team A makes a strong start in the first 10 overs, Team B's odds may be slightly higher. Then if Team A loses two wickets in the 11th over, the balance of odds shifts quickly.

In T20, the powerplay (first 6 overs) and death overs (last 4 overs) see the most activity in live markets. In ODI, the run rate in the middle overs, and in Test cricket session-by-session changes, add further depth to live betting.

How betting exchange and multi bets work

There is an important difference between regular betting and a betting exchange. In regular betting you bet directly against the bookmaker. On an exchange you can bet against other players — and you have two options: BACK (betting on a win) or LAY (betting against a win).

Betting exchange example (decimal 2.00):
BACKing Team A means a ৳500 bet — if Team A wins you profit ৳500, if they do not you lose ৳500.
LAYing Team A means standing against a ৳500 backer — if Team A does not win you profit ৳500, if Team A wins you pay out ৳500 (liability ৳500 × 1.00).
Figures shown before commission is deducted.

Multi bet example: three separate bets on three matches — odds 1.60, 1.80 and 1.90. Combined odds: 1.60 × 1.80 × 1.90 = 5.47 (approximately). A ৳100 stake returns ৳547 if all three are correct. But if even one is wrong the full ৳100 is lost — that risk is worth keeping in mind.

Multi bet calculation — quick view

Selection Odds
Match 1 Winner1.60
Match 2 Winner1.80
Match 3 Winner1.90
Combined Odds ≈ 5.47
Return on ৳100 stake ৳547

A multi bet can only be won if every selection is correct.

A few things to keep in mind before starting cricket betting

Betting is for entertainment — no profit is guaranteed. Keeping the following points in mind will make the experience better.

1

Set a budget first

Decide in advance the maximum amount you will bet in each session and stay within that limit. Betting is one form of entertainment — putting your entire budget at risk is not advisable.

2

Focus on one market

Rather than jumping into many markets at once, start with one or two — such as match winner or total runs. Once you understand the rules well, try other markets.

3

Understand the format before you bet

T20, ODI and Test each have their own pace. Live betting in T20 requires quick decisions, while Test cricket gives you time to analyse sessions.

4

Know the odds format

Decimal odds are the most straightforward — simply multiply to find the total return. Decimal is a good starting point for beginners.

5

Play responsibly

When betting stops being fun and starts feeling like pressure, it is time to stop. Read the responsible gaming guidelines — prometric has tools to help you set limits.

Frequently Asked Questions about cricket betting

T20 is the easiest format for beginners because matches are short and results come quickly. There are no draws in T20, so you only have to choose between two teams. ODI requires a slightly deeper approach, and in Test cricket a draw is a valid result, meaning you have to pick from three possible outcomes. That is why it makes sense to start with the T20 match winner market.

Decimal odds of 1.50 mean you get back a total of ৳1.50 for every ৳1 staked — that is a profit of ৳0.50. A winning bet of ৳1,000 returns a total of ৳1,500 (৳500 profit plus your ৳1,000 stake back). These odds are usually seen on favourites. In fractional format this is 1/2, and in American format it is -200.

A wicket falling in live betting means odds shift instantly. The team that loses the wicket comes under pressure, so their odds of winning lengthen and the opponent's odds shorten. If 3 wickets fall in the first powerplay, that team's odds can increase significantly. These swings happen fastest in T20 and more gradually in Test cricket.

Both BPL and IPL are T20 format tournaments, so the types of betting markets are the same. The difference is in the range of odds — IPL, being a larger tournament, generally offers more markets. BPL features Bangladesh's own teams, so local bettors tend to follow it more closely. Both offer match winner, toss, top batsman and total runs markets.

In a multi bet every selection must win — if even one loses, the entire bet is lost. Three matches may each feel 95% certain, but the combined probability of all three winning in a multi bet drops considerably. Multi bets are for excitement, not guaranteed profit. Beginners are better off starting with single bets.
